Vietnam's Seafood Exports Grow

Vietnam's 2007 seafood exports reached $1 billion in the first four months of 2008, up 8.4 percent from the same period last year, says Deputy Minister of Agricultural and Rural Development Luong Le Phuong.

The country's seafood exports totaled 1.19 million metric tons from January to April, an increase of 7.4 percent from the same period last year.

Vietnam's basa exports, which represented one-third of the country's total seafood export value, jumped 42 percent, says Phuong.

The European Union was the No. 1 importer of Vietnamese seafood, accounting for 26 percent of the country's total seafood export value, followed by Japan and the United States.

The depreciating U.S. dollar is helping to stimulated seafood exports to the EU, says Phuong.
