RPS Biologiques’ natural fish health products receive Canadian approvals

RPS Biologiques, a biotech company that manufactures health products for the human and animal sectors, has received two “Notification Numbers” from the Health Canada Veterinary Drugs Directorate (VDD) for two of their products: Supratect-L and Supratect-P.

The numbers indicate that Canada’s VDD has tested and approved the two products for use commercially. The two products are intended to be used to promote fish health and be used in the aquaculture sector, according to the company.

“It consists of natural ingredients that are completely safe and beneficial for the target species,” RPS Biologiques wrote. “Supratect is the first and only current natural fish health product to receive approval, in Canada, through the Veterinary Health Products notification program.”

The company has been performing small-scale trials of different products since 2015, and the testing required to introduce Supratect to the market took three years, according to RPS Biologiques. According to the company president, Subrata Chowdhury, the goal of the company is to “Become a leader in developing safe, all-natural fish-health products in the aquaculture sector.” Chowdhury is a molecular biologist with experience in microbiology, virology, immunology, and genetics.

The company’s first product to become commercially available, Supratect is used to combat saprolegniosis, a type of water mold disease. In trials, the product has been “as effective as chemical based competitive products,” according to the company. So far, it has been tested on maintaining health for fish and fish eggs in finfish species.
