Prices are inching up for tuna in Japan.
At Tokyo’s Toyosu Wholesale Market on 26 April, fresh bluefin tuna from Wakayama Prefecture sold at an average price of JPY 6,347 (USD 57.01, EUR 50.66) per kilogram, while that from other domestic sources sold in a wide range, between JPY 1,620 and JPY 5,400 (USD 14.55 to USD 48.51, EUR 12.97 to EUR 43.24). Imports averaged JPY 2,457 (USD 22.07, EUR 19.67). Frozen bluefin averaged JPY 3,240 (USD 29.10, EUR 25.94).
Southern bluefin tuna averaged JPY 2,660 (USD 23.89, EUR 21.30) fresh and JPY 1,841 (USD 16.54, EUR 14.74) frozen.
Fresh bigeye tuna from Wakayama Prefecture averaged JPY 1,080 (USD 9.70, EUR 8.65), while frozen averaged JPY 792 (USD 7.11, EUR 6.34). Imports sold in a wide range from JPY 2,160 to JPY 4,320 (USD 19.40 to USD 38.81, EUR 17.30 to EUR 34.60) for fresh and JPY 864 to JPY 5,076 (USD 7.76 to USD 54.60, EUR 6.92 to EUR 40.65) for frozen, probably reflecting size differences.
Frozen yellowfin tuna sold at an average of JPY 832 (USD 7.47, EUR 6.66) per kilogram.
In mid-February 2019, the average wholesale price of fresh bluefin tuna at Toyosu was JPY 4,881 (USD 43.86, EUR 38.57) per kilogram. Frozen was JPY 3,586 (USD 32.21, EUR 28.33).
Yellowfin tuna averaged JPY 1,692 (USD 15.20, EUR 13.36) for fresh and JPY 842 (USD 7.56, EUR 6.65) for frozen. Bigeye tuna averaged JPY 2,299 (USD 20.64, EUR 18.16) for fresh and JPY 1,086 (USD 9.75, EUR 8.58) for frozen. Southern bluefin was available only frozen, at JPY 1,823 (USD 16.37, EUR 14.40).
