Bangladesh: December 2018 shrimp sourcing update

December marks the end of the cultivation season for black tiger shrimp (P. monodon) in Bangladesh, with most farmers draining their ponds. 

However, some farmers will keep their ponds stocked to grow larger sizes and to benefit from the low supply, aiming for higher farm gate prices. Next to this, semi-intensive farms will continue to farm and stock, with post-larvae being supplied by a few hatcheries. However, the overall production volume from these farms is relatively low. 

Based on trade data of the four major importing countries in the European Union, the overall volume of shrimp exports from Bangladesh to the E.U. has decreased by 2 percent compared to the first two quarters of 2017.
