India: March 2019 shrimp sourcing update

Every shrimp buyer around the world is likely looking at how the farming situation in India will develop in the first half of 2019. Shocked by last year’s record harvests, buyers are now in wait-and-see mode and trying to pick the best moment to place their orders. 

ShrimpTails sources report that stocking in many areas in Andhra Pradesh, and also in other states, has been done later than normal and many farmers have gone for moderate stocking densities only. As a result, we expect harvests to be delayed and more spread out than last year. While harvests in Andhra Pradesh normally start in April, this year’s peak harvest will only take place in May. What will happen with prices will not only depend on Indian harvests, but also on how demand from the U.S., India’s most important market, develops.
