Southern Europe has seen good Christmas sales of Pacific white shrimp (L. vannamei) stocks. However, at the same time, suppliers of other species have struggled to sell their more expensive products. Altogether, in southern Europe (Spain, Italy and France) shrimp sales in 2018 have most likely reached a similar level as in 2017. While the year-end data has yet to be published, at the end of November the three countries combined were still 1 percent ahead of 2017’s import volumes. France, for which 2018 year-end data has already been published, even exceeded its 2017 import volume with 2 percent. Southern European buyers will start looking around for new products after Semana Santa, the Spanish Holy Week before Easter, which runs from 14 to 20 April this year.
