High prices here to stay for farmed salmon

Prices for Norway’s farmed Atlantic salmon remained very high throughout July, with prices for fresh fish averaging around NOK 65 (USD 7.66, EUR 6.91) per kg. Though prices have started to decline slightly in line with greater supplies, future prices of 3 to 6 kg fish will continue to be high over the coming months, with analysts expecting them to average around NOK 58 (USD 6.84, EUR 6.16) per kg in September, NOK 56 (USD 6.60, EUR 5.95) in October and NOK 62 (USD 7.31, EUR 6.59) in November.

The average FOB price at Norwegian Customs for fresh salmon so far in 2016 is NOK 59.98 (USD 7.07, EUR 6.37) per kg, up 45 percent year-on-year.

The average price of frozen salmon exports in July was NOK 70.85 (USD 8.35, EUR 7.53) per kg, up 64 percent compared with the same period of 2015. For the year to date, the average price of this product was NOK 54.28 (USD 6.40, EUR 5.77) per kg, up 24 percent year-on-year.

According to Norwegian Statistics, the country had exported 421,397 metric tons (MT) of fresh salmon and 8,934 MT of frozen salmon by the last week of July, representing year-on-year decreases of 9 percent and 38 percent respectively.

In the first seven months of this year, Norway’s salmon exports totaled NOK 33 billion (USD 3.9 billion, EUR 3.5 billion), an increase of 27 percent or NOK 7 billion (USD 825.1 million, EUR 743.7 million) year-on-year. Poland and France have continued to be the main buyers of Norwegian salmon this year.

Norway’s total salmon harvest is expected to drop by approximately 100,000 MT this year to 1.1 million MT.
