Seafood sales between EU member states increased 9 percent in value and 1 percent in volume in the first six months of this year with the intra-bloc salmonid trade continuing to follow its 10-year growth trend.
Overall, more than 3 million metric tons (MT) of fish and fishery products were traded between EU member states with a value close to EUR 12 billion (USD 12.5 billion) during this period. Crustaceans, groundfish and salmonids accounted for 56 percent of the value and 37 percent of the volume traded within the bloc, with salmonids increasing 18 percent in value, while groundfish and crustaceans were both up 7 percent.
The intra-EU salmonid trade was worth more than EUR 3.5 billion (USD 3.6 billion) in H1 2016 based on a total volume of 497,000 MT, up 3 percent year-on-year. The average export price increased 15 percent to EUR 7.10 (USD 7.40) per kg in this period.
Trout exports increased 13 percent in volume and value during this period reaching 46,000 MT worth EUR 227 million (USD 236.7 million). The average export price remained stable at EUR 4.90 (USD 5.11) per kg.
Most trout is traded as fresh and smoked, with export prices during H1 2016 averaging EUR 4.17 (USD 4.35) and EUR 11.52 (USD 12.01) per kg, respectively.
Denmark and Sweden accounted for 45 percent of the total export value in the EU in H1 2016, and saw increases in their export value of 14 percent and 54 percent respectively, compared with H1 2015.
