 5.) Shen Lin, Chair of Dalian Dong Lin Foodstuffs Corp.

Shen Lin is one of two women on the list, and one a new breed of young businesspeople drawn to the margins in seafood trading and importing. A graduate of prestigious Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shen has established two high-end brands: LeYu and YuYan, through her firm Dalian Dong Lin Foodstuffs Corp.

4.) Li Hong Wei, general manager of Qingdao Guoxing Food Corp

Qingdao Guoxing Food Corp is a rare example of a company that has successfully made the transition from being a processor for re-export to being an importer and a processor for the domestic market. In addition its success with importing krill harvested near Antarctica, Guoxing has seen skyrocketing sales of its ‘Hai Mai’ brand of packaged domestic and imported seafood. The brand has become a feature in supermarkets across Beijing and is also available in smaller cities through Guoxing’s own stores as well as online.

3.) Hou Bi Sheng, head of Shenzhen Xian Dong Shenghuo Corp

A supplier of supermarkets, the firm is based in the mainland port city of Shenzhen, near Hong Kong and focuses increasingly on imported seafood.

2.) Zeng Yue Xiang, general manager Zhejiang Da Yang Shi Jia (also known as Ocean Family)

Formerly a processor and canner of seafood, Ocean Family has in the past decade sought to become a distributor of value added and imported seafood products. It now operates 10its Shi Ji Da Hui brand seafood stores and 25 counters in major supermarkets around China, offering a large variety of sashimi- and sushi-type seafood in both.

Dr. An Yan (pictured left), the mainland China representative of Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), was ranked fifth on last year’s list and is credited by the vote organizers with “increasing awareness of sustainability” in China. Growing awareness of sustainability issues around seafood is seen as an uphill battle in China, where food safety tends to take priority for consumers.
