Prices for Copper River salmon in 2016 started out lofty, what with projections of a lower salmon run in Alaska and the pressures associated with the Chilean salmon sector, which battled with steep mortalities as the result of a toxic algae bloom.
As of June, buyers of Copper River salmon weren’t impressed with the volume of the harvest or the smaller sizes of fish.
“There are smaller sizes this year, but it was anticipated,” said Rob McNutt,
“The fish have been running smaller. The larger fish are more desirable…for production,” said Jeff Berger, general manager of The Auction Block Company in Homer, Alaska, a wild salmon processor.
