It was the crisis that rocked the farmed salmon industry early in 2016. Prominent salmon farmers in Chile, operating out of Region X, were forced to contend with a harmful algae bloom that swept the area starting in late February and extending through March 2016.

The roster of the affected companies was extensive: AquaChile, Australis Mar, Blumar, Camanchaca, Cermaq, Australis Mar, Salmones Humboldt, Marine Farm, Marine Harvest Chile, Multiexport Foods and Ventisqueros. And there was little to be done regarding the event, which hinged on factors that were “completely natural and environmental,” said Felipe Manterola, the general manager of SalmonChile.

“There’s very little we can do to stop or change it in any way,” Manterola added.
