9.) Tilapia virus, spreading rapidly, poses threat to global food security
Tilapia Lake Virus (TiLV) is the latest nasty relative to come from the same family as one of seafood’s other great microbial foes, infectious salmon anaemia (ISA), and tilapia farmers worldwide are growing more worried about their stocks as TiLV instances increase. While the virus poses no medical risk to public health, it does threaten global food security and nutrition, according to the FAO. Because of tilapia’s low price, its omnivorous diet, tolerance to high-density farming methods, and previously strong resistance to disease, the fish has become an important protein staple, especially in developing countries and among poorer consumers.
