BioMar expands priobiotic, bioremediation offerings with SmartCare Balance line

BioMar's SmartCare Balance launch event in Ecuador.

Aarhus, Denmark-based BioMar has introduced a bioremediation product that can improve environmental conditions for farmed shrimp from hatchery to grow-out.

The launch of the aquafeed firm’s new product category took place at an event in Ecuador on 28 February, 2023. The SmartCare Balance line of products are probiotic mixes produced at BioMar’s facility in France. The products are now available in Ecuador and distribution will soon be expanded to the rest of Latin America where BioMar operates, as well as in some Asian countries.

"Shrimp health and welfare start with the ideal environment for the shrimp to thrive in. These conditions will aid in better survival rates and higher performance,” BioMar Latin America, Shrimp, and Hatchery Vice President Henrik Aarestrup said.

SmartCare Balance contains probiotics that carry a preventive health claim approved by the European Union for inclusion in aquafeeds, according to BioMar. The company has been using probiotics in some of its shrimp and fish feeds since 2010 in pursuing “a holistic approach to health and welfare,” it said.

The SmartCare Balance products for hatchery shrimp is part of BioMar’s Larviva hatchery feed range, and the line also contains some products for shrimp in grow-out ponds.

“Since we entered Ecuador in 2017, we have been building our market position, and with Larviva, we have achieved market leadership in the hatchery segment, helping customers reduce their hatchery cycle from 21 to 15 days,” Aarestrup said. “In addition, we have a strong local presence and a team of experts supporting our customers. It was clear to us that Ecuador was the ideal location to first introduce our new products before expanding to other markets.”
