Canadian Fish Farms Sued by Federal Agency

Several Atlantic Canada fish farms are being sued by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency for more than $1 million in overdueloan payments. The federal agency has filed several claims in the past year against aquaculture firms that received funding.

The most recent case filed this week in the Court of Queen's Bench in Saint John, New Brunswick, is against two Deer Island-based operations, Tidal Run Aqua and Simpson's Island Salmon, for more than $500,000.

Last year, ACOA also sued North Star Salmon Ltd. for a little more than $50,000, and Enterprise Ltd. and two company officials for more than $63,000.

ACOA's Web site says it has distributed more than $6 million to aquaculture firms in southern New Brunswick in the last two years.
