First net pen salmon receives Seafood Watch “Green” rating

Norwegian aquaculture investment firm Salten Aqua Group is the first conventional net pen salmon farming organization to earn a “Green” ranking from the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program.

Skjerstadfjorden, Norway-based Salten Aqua Group, which operates Edelfarm, Wenberg Fiskeoppdrett, and Salten Stamfisk, was granted the Green rating after a yearlong assessment.

The companies in Skjerstadfjorden score very well “as there are good environmental data over several years with knowledge retrieval and the overall environmental impact is low, according to the Seafood Watch standard,” Salten Aqua Group said.

Of the 10 main criteria in Seafood Watch, nine of the Skjerstadfjorden’s farms are rated in the best category, the organization added.

“Salmon production in the Skjerstadfjord will never be large in volume either at national or international scale,” Salten Aqua Managing Director Geir Wenberg said. Nonetheless, the Seafood Watch ranking is “important for us locally and for export of salmon in the international market,” he added.
