Kona Blue Water Farms of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, is expanding production to Mexico, according to a report in the Honolulu Advertiser.

The company plans to raise kahala, or amberjack, in the Sea of Cortez, also called the Gulf of California. Neil Sims, company co-founder and president, told the newspaper that hauling the fish to Los Angeles by truck will reduce its carbon dioxide emissions.

Kona Blue raises Kona Kampachi, a yellowtail relative, in net pens off the coast of Hawaii's main island. Sims says rumors that Kona Blue is leaving Hawaii are untrue.
