Marine Harvest axes 500 jobs in Chile

Marine Harvest will reduce its Marine Harvest Chile workforce by up to 500 employees due to the recent algal bloom and poor results over the last year.

In a statement, the salmon farming giant said it would revert with a complete restructuring plan of Marine Harvest Chile in connection with its first-quarter results release on 11 May.

Last month, it conceded that the severe algae bloom at its Chilean operations in Region X would result in the loss of all its 2.9 million fish at its three seawater sites: Punta Redonda, Huar Sur and Huar Norte.

All of its fish were covered by insurance.
