Barnstable, Massachusetts, U.S.A.-based Cape Cod Oyster Company has announced its acquisition of a new 5-acre location near Megansett Harbor in Falmouth, Massachusetts, which will allow it to produce oysters year-round.
“Farming in multiple locations allows us to deliver fresh product 52 weeks a year, even in a region with just a 25-week growing season,” Cape Cod Oyster President Dave Ryan said. “Adding the Megansett lease enhances our ability to meet customer demand with consistent, top-tier oysters while protecting the waterways we depend on.”
The company, which currently produces 10 percent of all Massachusetts’s oysters, said that it had already begun cleaning and restoring the new site by removing old gear and preparing it for cultivation, which will occur via its low-impact floating basket system.
The company has been growing oysters in the area since 1983 and currently employs more than 20 full-time employees. In a release about the news, it said that its investment in the Megansett location would strengthen its “environmental stewardship and suppor[t] good jobs in the community.”
As well as operating an aquaculture business, Cape Cod Oyster Company runs an online marketplace where it sells oysters sourced from local sustainable partners.
The company, which supplies oysters to restaurants and retailers nationwide, owns what is believed to be the oldest shellfish grant in Massachusetts, a historic parcel in the bay of East Falmouth, the preservation of which dates to 1877.
