Newfoundland aquaculture looks to Global Trust

Miranda Pryor, the executive director of the Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association (NAIA), said that the government funding announced for the association on 5 January will help all aquaculture companies in the province secure more markets for the future.

The NAIA, with a CAD 75,800 contribution from the provincial government, will secure the services of Global Trust, an independent consultant, to explore certification and standards for the rapidly growing aquaculture industry.

The funding and the work by Global Trust, will be very important to the industry as there is increasing market pressure by consumers to ensure that food, including aquaculture products, is produced in a safe and sustainable manner. With best practices already in place, the consultant’s work will further position companies operating in the finfish and shellfish farming and processing sectors to be ready for future market requirements.
