SalMar nets organic salmon producer

SalMar on Thursday announced that it has agreed to acquire Villa Miljølaks for NOK 14 million.

Villa Miljølaks holds a total of three fish-farming licenses in Norway, including two for the production of organic salmon and an R&D license that runs until 31 December 2012. In addition, the company operated an R&D license for Aalesund University College that runs until June 2012. The company expects to harvest about 2,500 metric tons (gutted weight) this year. Total production for the four licenses is about 4,000 metric tons.

The R&D activities of the company’s two R&D licenses are aimed at projects related to use of wrasse/cleanerfish to combat salmon lice, which is an established priority for SalMar.

SalMar already owns three licenses related to organic salmon aquaculture, and the acquisition strengthens the company’s commitment and ability to deliver for the market.

The acquisition is scheduled to be completed on 11 July.
