U.S. Foodservice, GAA partner

U.S. Foodservice on Thursday announced it has partnered with the Global Aquaculture Alliance.

The Columbia, Md., company is the first U.S. broadline distributor to offer farmed seafood carrying the Best Aquaculture Practices certification logo.

U.S. Foodservice will begin to certify its source of Harbor Banks private label catfish to BAP standards immediately, followed by shrimp and then tilapia in the coming months.

“U.S. Foodservice is committed to offering sustainable product choices to our customers who expect and demand the most environmentally responsible foods,” said Jorge Hernandez, food safety and quality assurance senior VP. “The GAA certification of farm-raised seafood fills an important gap in seafood procurement processes, and we are committed to continued partnership with the food industry to promote environmentally responsible aquaculture.”

U.S. Foodservice is also the first foodservice distributor to provide Marine Stewardship Council certified seafood.
