Port Lincoln, Australia-based vertically integrated shellfish producer Yumbah Aquaculture has become the first oyster producer in Australia to achieve Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification.

“Becoming the first oyster producer in the country to achieve BAP certification is a proud moment for Yumbah. It reflects the work of our staff who keep the business at the forefront of responsible seafood, delivering premium Australian oysters of the world," Yumbah CEO David Wood said. "It’s a great way to show the standards we work toward every day, producing oysters responsibly and sustainability.”

BAP certification is achieved through independent assessment of a producer’s operations and requires businesses to meet standards of water quality, stock care, traceability, and ethical labor practices.

Yumbah produces oysters, abalone, and mussels out of farms at Boomer Bay, Eaglehawk Neck, and St. Helens.

Yumbah is also pursuing an acquisition of kingfish farmer Clean Seas Seafood in a deal reportedly worth AUS 28.1 million (USD 18.3 million, EUR 16.0 million). Clean Seas approved the deal in February and, by late March, had announced a scheme implementation deed (SID) which would see Yumbah acquire all shares of the company for AUD 0.14 (USD 0.09, EUR 0.08).

Most recently, the company announced on the Australian Stock Exchange that the Federal Court of Australia had ordered Clean Seas to convene a shareholder meeting to consider and vote on the proposal on 23 June.
