Tropical Aquaculture appoints new executive vice president
Tropical Aquaculture Products, Inc., a seafood sales, distribution, and marketing firm with operations in Rockland, Maine and Rutland, Vermont, has hired James M. Lesser as its new executive vice president, the company announced on 26 September.
In his new role, Lesser will oversee Tropical’s overall sales, marketing, and logistics efforts. He will be based out of the company’s recently-opened Rockland office, Tropical confirmed in a press release.
Lesser’s expertise in fresh produce, fresh and frozen dairy, and shelf stable food and beverage products will be an asset for Tropical as it continues to expand and move forward, said the company’s founder John K. Schramm.
“I’m excited that Jim is joining the Tropical team, his understanding and knowledge of perishable products from other food categories is transferable to our industry,” Schramm said. “His sales, marketing, and general management skills will help us achieve our goal of becoming a best-in-class business.”
Founded in 1995, Tropical Aquaculture works with a cooperative of family-run aquaculture operations throughout South America and beyond. The company was one of the first importers of fresh, premium tilapia into the United States. Its portfolio includes fresh and frozen tilapia, fresh and frozen shrimp, fresh steelhead trout, fresh European Union-certified organic salmon, and fresh Icelandic day-boat cod. Tropical’s branded products are carried by retailers and restaurants across North America.
“As the global population grows, increasing food production in an efficient and sustainable manner becomes even more critical, aquaculture is a key to that challenge,” Lesser said. “Tropical has a great history working with the farms to bring the best fish to customers, I’m looking forward to working with John, the Tropical team, and the farms.”
