Axfood Earns Best Ranking from Greenpeace

Greenpeace on Thursday released a follow-up of its ranking of food retailers' environmental compliance with seafood products.

Axfood, of Sweden, was one company that earned a top ranking on the updated list. The retailer recently adopted a new seafood policy that prohibits sourcing species from threatened stocks and marketing green-listed species certified as sustainable.

Axfood bases its stock assessments on the World Wildlife Fund's seafood guide.

"We set our own long-term agenda for our environmental initiatives," says Axfood CEO Anders Stralman. "But the ranking from Greenpeace still provides confirmation that we are heading in the right direction."

Axfood, one of Scandinavia's largest food retailers, operates more than 220 stores.
