The National Fisheries Society (SNP), the trade group representing the fishing industry in Peru, took part in Peru’s Sustainability Festival in Lima on 15 July.
Organized by Peru 2021, a government-aligned initiative aiming to improve sustainable practices in the country, the festival aimed to publicize the achievements and efforts of government and industry towards more efficient use of resources and better care of the environment.
At the festival, SNP Social Responsibility Coordinator Solang Orihuela pledged the organization’s commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Also speaking at the event were representatives from fishing communities in Peru, including Pisco, Chimbote, Malabrigo (Chicama), Chancay, and Supe.
Also at the festival, SNP announced the release of "Pesca Play,” an interactive application for phones that aims to promote sustainability in fisheries and seafood consumption.
“This innovative interactive game aims to raise awareness among the population about respect for minimum sizes of fish, closed seasons, and responsible consumption,” according to SNP.
