Icelandic cod fishery gets RFM re-certified

Iceland’s cod fisheries have been recertified as sustainable according to that country’s responsible fisheries management (RFM) program.

The announcement followed a review of the cod fisheries’ management, stock assessment and other factors. The fishery has a stock quota for the current season of 216,000 metric tons, and stocks continue to remain healthy.

The RFM certification program is based on standards set by the U.N.’s Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute in the United States has created a similar RFM program, also based on FAO standards, which the institute presents as an alternative to the Marine Stewardship Council’s certification program.
