Reston, Virginia, U.S.A.-based International Coalition of Fisheries Associations (ICFA) will host a panel on biodiversity conservation and seafood production in marine ecosystems on 21 April at the Seafood Expo Global/Seafood Processing Global in Barcelona, Spain.

The panel, titled “Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) and Global Food Security,” will explore how biodiversity conservation and seafood production can work together for industry leaders and why a balanced BBNJ Agreement is “essential to protecting both marine ecosystems and global food security,” the organization said in a release.

“The twin objectives of the BBNJ Agreement are conservation and sustainable use,” ICFA Chair Ivan López Van der Veen said in the release. “Sustainable seafood is essential to global food security and nutrition, and meeting growing global demand will require more sustainably produced seafood. The health, livelihoods, and economic well-being of millions around the world depend on a thriving seafood sector."

The panel’s lineup includes Audun Lem, chair of the Fisheries Transparency Initiative's International Board; López Van der Veen, ICFA chair and vice president of the Spanish Fisheries Confederation (CEPSECA); Lisa Wallenda Picard, president and CEO of the National Fisheries Institute; and John Jankovich-Bésán, chair of the Harvest Sector CEO Council.

SeafoodSource Executive Director Chris Chase will moderate the discussion.

ICFA represents the global fishing industry and advocates for sustainable fisheries management and responsible ocean governance across six continents with governments and stakeholders to advance policies that support healthy oceans, resilient fisheries, and secure food systems.
