Kwik’Pak launches traceable “King of Ketas” salmon

Alaska-based Kwik’pak Fisheries will become the first wild salmon producer to offer a 100 percent traceable product when it launches its “The King of Ketas” campaign. The company’s fully traceable keta salmon will hit supermarkets and foodservice outlets across the nation just in time for the start of the Yukon River keta salmon fishery.

Supermarkets and restaurants across the country will participate in the campaign by featuring ads, in-store specials and press releases starting in early July and many will run storewide promotions. Participating stores include: Wegmans, Whole Foods, Niemans, Dierbergs, Central Markets (Texas), Coastal Seafoods, The Fish Market, Bristol Farms, Central Market (WA) and Metropolitan Market.

Kwik’pak is working with Seattle-based Trace Register to create transparency between the product and the consumer via a label that consumers can use to trace the product back to its source. The Trace Register™ system is a Web-based third-party “registry” application used by more than 190 companies around the world to create and store product-source information that is shared among companies throughout the supply chain.

“This is a valuable fish, and we are committed to leading the industry by using traceability to protect against fraud,” said Kwik’pak General Manager Jack Schultheis. “It is also our goal to ensure that the Yup’ik fishermen who supply our company are getting a well-deserved premium for their efforts and for their superior salmon.”

Kwik’pak Fisheries is owned by the Yukon Delta Fisheries Development Association and was formed in 2002 to provide economic security and promote sustainable economic development in the six Yup’ik villages of the Yukon River Delta.
