New campaign promotes eco-safe tuna fishing

A coalition of seafood and fishing companies unveiled a new campaign this week to promote more sustainable tuna fishing and proper product labeling.

The Campaign for Eco-Safe Tuna, according to a release, advocates for reducing bycatch and eliminating unsustainable practices such as using fish-aggregating devices.

“The Campaign for Eco-Safe Tuna believes in a world where fishing for tuna need not be synonymous with damaging the environment,” the campaign said in its release. “Over the coming weeks and months, the Campaign for Eco-Safe tuna will undertake a series of initiatives to protect the entire marine ecosystem and promote eco-safe tuna fishing practices.”

The campaign’s principal backers include companies representing the bulk of Mexico’s tuna fleet, which has made headlines in the past speaking out against bycatch doing harm to populations of dolphins and other non-fish species. The Campaign also works with leading environmental and conservation groups.
