A Peruvian fishmeal and fish oil processor has received Friend of the Sea certification for fish oil from its anchovy and mackerel fleets.

Pesquera Diamante just completed an audit of its anchovy, chub and jack mackerel fishing operations, according to Friend of the Sea. The vessels are monitored by satellite to verify each is staying away from Marine Protected Areas. There is no endangered species bycatch, and the anchovy and mackerel stocks are not overexploited. Friend of the Sea also said a well managed chain of custody ensures no mixing between certified and non-certified products.

“We are pleased Pesquera Diamante has been awarded the Friend of the Sea certification as this further confirms our company’s engagement to marine conservation,” said Manuel Salazar, CEO of Pesquera Diamante.
