Tilapia lake virus (TiLV)
It’s new and not much is known about it. To make matters more intense, tilapia lake virus (TiLV) targets the USD 7.5 billion (USD 6.7 billion) global tilapia industry, which has dealers of the popular fish species on both the wild and farmed side deeply concerned. While not much is known about the condition as of yet, the pathogen appears to be “most closely related to a family of influenza viruses called orthomyxoviruses,” said Nischay Mishra, an associate research scientist at the Center for Infection and Immunity at Columbia's Mailman School, who is studying the virus. Tilapia die-offs in places like Israel, Colombia and Ecuador turned scientists on to the virus, which can cause liver disease and brain swelling in afflicted fish.
