The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a recall on one lot of Vasco & Co. Filet Royal Smoked Atlantic Salmon for possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
The recalled lot number is 399417; the affected product was distributed in the province of Quebec.
The CFIA advises the public not to consume, sell, use, or distribute products from this lot and recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased.
Members of the public who believe they have become sick from ingesting this product are instructed to contract their healthcare providers.
"Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can make you sick," the CFIA said. "Symptoms include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness.”
Those with weakened immune systems, such as the pregnant or elderly, are more vulnerable to illness. Listeria is a particular concern during pregnancy because, though it may not make a pregnant person seriously ill, it can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.
The CFIA instigates food safety investigations for a wide variety of reasons, from complaints by consumers to routine audits. This recall was triggered by routine CFIA test results; there have been no reported illnesses associated with the affected product, but as the CFIA investigation is ongoing, a recall of other products is possible.
Vasco & Co. is owned by Coral Springs, Florida, U.S.A.-based seafood company Sea Delight, which also owns Fisherman's Grill products.
