Italian Rainbow Trout Certified Sustainable

Societa Agricola Sterpo SpA, based in Northern Italy's Udine province, has received sustainable certification from Friend of the Sea for all of its consumer products, including frozen and ready-to-cook rainbow trout.

Societa Agricola Sterpo was founded in 1976 and supplies Coop, Finiper and Metro supermarkets in Italy.

"Consumers are more and more demanding for sustainable production, a concept easier for them to understand than organic," said Paolo Colautti of Societa Agricola Sterpo. "Friend of the Sea certification has gained visibility and credibility on the market. It represents for us an important added value and further recognition of our environmental commitment."

Friend of the Sea has certified more than 25 farmed-seafood products from 10 different species, including caviar, cod, halibut, salmon, sea bass, sea bream, sea trout, sturgeon, rainbow trout and turbot. Products originate from both inland and offshore plants in France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. A forthcoming audit by the organization in March will include mussels in Spain, kingfish in Australia and salmon and cod in Norway.

Friend of the Sea is also auditing several main fishmeal and fish-feed products worldwide following requests for certified sustainable fish feed.
