Australian grocery chains Coles and Woolworths are discounting rock lobster – along with several other seafood species – leading up to Christmas.
Coles, which operates 2,500 retail outlets throughout the country, has slashed prices on rock lobster, tiger prawns, and other seafood.
The grocery chain was selling Marine Stewardship Council-certified Western Australia cooked rock lobsters for AUD 27 (USD 18, EUR 17) each in November, but slashed the price to AUD 22 (USD 15, EUR 14) each in early December, per 7News.
Woolworth’s added rock lobsters to its “Same Price or Less” deals, touting Western Australia rock lobster for AUD 24 (USD 16, EUR 15) each, 7News reported.
Additionally, Coles said on its social media channels it “DROPPED & LOCKED” the price of of its Australian thawed large black tiger prawns to AUD 28 (USD 19, EUR 18) per kilogram through the end of January.
The supermarket also reduced the price of its Australian thawed extra-large black tiger prawns to AUD 30 (USD 20, EUR 19) per kilogram from AUD 36 (USD 24, EUR 23) per kilogram.
“At Coles, customers buy over 70 percent more seafood in December compared to any other month so we have a great responsibility in providing the best value and supply across our entire seafood range so more of our customers can celebrate Christmas the Australian way – with an abundance of fresh seafood,” Coles Executive General Manager for Fresh Andy Mossop said.
More than 70 percent of Coles’ customers say the price is the most important factor when shopping for Christmas products, according to Mossop, “so we’ve worked hard with our fantastic partners to provide the best quality, responsibly-sourced seafood while keeping prices low as possible.”
Coles will also be selling large rock lobsters at its local stores in Tasmania for AUD 48 (USD 32, EUR 30) per lobster.
“We’re delighted to offer ample supply of Western Australia rock lobsters at just AUD 22, and for the first time have southern rock lobsters at our Tassie stores, which are internationally regarded as one of, it not the, premium fine-dining seafood experiences,” Mossop said.
