Chefs vie for national recognition

A panel of judges has selected a pool of 30 chefs from the U.S. and Canada to compete in the Skuna Bay Taste of Derby contest.

The chefs are all vying for the chance to cook in Louisville, Ken. at the Kentucky Derby. After a series of competitions, the two finalists will travel to Louisville to be VIP guests at the race, and participate in the final round. The winner, according to Skuna Bay, will receive recognition in a national ad in Saveur magazine.

The 30 chefs were chosen in the first qualifying round. The chefs submitted a recipe featuring Skuna Bay salmon along with a photo between 25 February and 17 March. The judges chose the 30 competitors this week.

The chefs come from all over the U.S., from California to Colorado to Pennsylvania, and New York City, and from Calgary and Vancouver. Competitions will begin all over the country, starting at the end of March, whittling the contestants down to 10. They will then participate in one of two semi-finals, in Los Angeles and Chicago, with the two finalists going on to Kentucky.
