Australian outlets of Coles Supermarkets and Domino’s pizza restaurants have launched holidays specials incorporating Marine Stewardship Council-certified Karumba banana prawns.
At Coles, Karumba banana prawns are now available as ready-to-cook skewers with a range of marinades including chili, sweet chili and garlic. At Domino’s, Karumba Banana Prawns are being served on the chain’s new Garlic Prawn; BBQ Prawn; and Reef, Steak, and Bacon pizzas.
The prawns are being sourced from Mt. Hawthorn, Western Australia, Australia-based Austral Fisheries, which operates 10 of the 52 licensed vessels fishing the northern prawn fishery, described by the company as “the world’s first certified sustainable tropical prawn fishery.”
Austral Fisheries CEO David Carter said Coles and Domino’s launching the new products “is a wonderful reward for the huge investment in the northern prawn fishery.” The company has put more than AUD 20 million (USD 13.7 million, EUR 12.3 million) into new boats, licenses, processing equipment, trials of RFID track and trace technology, and brand development focused on the fishery in the past three years, it said in a press release.
The fishery has also been included in a new digital platform created by Austral in conjunction with WWF and the Boston Consulting Group called OpenSC, which allows consumers to learn where their shrimp was caught and see the details of its journey through the supply chain.
“Australian wild prawns are not only delicious, but consumers can have confidence when buying Australian wild prawns that they are buying healthy, sustainable prawns produced from well-managed and highly-regulated Australian fisheries,” Annie Jarrett, chair of the Australian Council of Prawn Fisheries (ACPF), said in a press release. “With a good supply of prawns available from all our fisheries, Australian wild prawns tick all the boxes for prawn lovers this Christmas.”
