Dutch retailers commit to MSC, ASC, WWF campaign

The Marine Stewardship Council, Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) and the World Wild Fund for Nature–Netherlands (WWF-NL) have announced the second week of September as “Think Fish Week.”

Dutch retailers have signed on to actively promote the MSC and ASC labeled products in store through nationwide advertising. The campaign aims to encourage consumers to make informed choices for sustainable wild and farmed seafood.

The first “Think Fish Week” is being supported by more than 85 percent of Dutch supermarkets.

Almost 3,300 locations will be displaying MSC and ASC labeled products including Albert Heijn, the Netherlands largest supermarket chain, Lidl, COOP and Spar. Foodservice suppliers Sligro and Sodexo will also join the campaign.

“Retailers have an important role to play in promoting sustainable seafood,” said Nicolas Guichoux, MSC global commercial director. “By sourcing and promoting certified products they help their customers to make responsible choices when shopping for fish. It is wonderful to see our partners supporting the ‘Think Fish Week’ and actively promoting sustainable seafood.”
