Italian retail collective Despar is bringing back its private label canned tuna line featuring yellowfin and skipjack, according to a recent report from European Supermarket Magazine.
The grocer recently received two certifications for its canned tuna – "Friend of the Sea" and "Dolphin-Safe" – and ‘guarantees’ that its re-introduced product line will be traceable from boat to package, containing tuna from suppliers who can ensure that the environmental impact associated with their fishing methods adheres to sustainable parameters.
Adult yellowfin and skipjack tuna within each forthcoming can from Despar will be sourced from non-overfished FAO areas, the retail consortium said.
Six member companies make up the Despar consortium, and serve to operate banner stores such as Despar, Eurospar, and Interspar in Italy.
