Kritsen expands delicatessen line

With an eye on expanding market share in the delicatessen seafood category, Kritsen has rolled out two seafood flan products. The warm entrées of salmon flan with a broccoli cream sauce and crab flan with a lobster cream sauce join the firm’s seafood terrines, rillettes and fish mousse portfolio.

The Brittany, France-based seafood brand advertises the products as “a modern and gourmand concept for the chilled seafood cabinet,” adding that both products are prepared without coloring or artificial flavorings.

Tapping into the resilient and growing trend for convenience foods, the seafood flans, sold in packs of two 70-gram flans, are quick and easy to prepare after re-heating and removing from the mold. The package features clearly visible ingredients and recommendations on how to accompany the flans.

Acquired by Norwegian fish farming behemoth Marine Harvest in 2007, Kritsen spans the European market, with production hailing from three sites in Brittany: Landivisiau, Chateaulin and Poullaouen.

In addition to delicatessen seafood products, Kritsen is a player on the French smoked salmon market. At 27,000 metric tons in 2007, France is the No. 1 smoked salmon consumer in the European Union, ahead of Germany. Together, consumers in these two countries represent nearly half of smoked salmon consumption in the EU, according to figures recently released by the French agency FranceAgrimer.
