New Product Update: Taking seafood to the streets

Curious about the latest seafood products making the rounds among retailers and restaurants? Wonder no more – SeafoodSource.com explores the newest foodservice offerings with the New Product Update.

Warmer weather has a tendency to coax people out of their homes and onto the streets, a fact that these three seafood sellers are banking on with their street food-inspired goods.

Fish N’ Chips On A Stick And Strip (High Liner Foods)

High Liner Foods has ditched the basket and gone for the stick with this highly portable take on fish and chips. Hearty cod is hand-wrapped and then doused in a french fry coating to make the Fish N’ Chips On A Stick And Strip a reality. The product speaks to a consumer base that seeks innovative ways to snack, according to its description, and would suit a restaurant menu well as an appetizer, tapas, small plate or happy hour offering.

  • Cooking Instructions: Set fryer to 360 degrees and fry strips for 6-7 minutes
  • Other Information: High Liner Foods is offering first-time buyers operator rebates of up to half off the price of each case of its Street Style Seafood products through September 2015. Furthermore, those who buy before 31 July 2015 will earn an extra USD 10 per case for a maximum of two cases.

Signature Singles (Beaver Street Fisheries Inc.)

The taco is a street food staple, one that Beaver Street Fisheries Inc. aims to capitalize on with its upcoming edition to the Sea Best product line. Signature Singles are chef-inspired, single-serving seafood meals that will offer consumers convenience and quality when they hit the market this spring.

“The new Signature Lobster Au Gratin, as well as the introduction of the Signature Singles line, allows Sea Best to offer a greater variety of quick seafood options to customers looking for high quality and convenient food items,” says Mark Frisch, executive VP.

One of the first Signature Singles will feature a black bean and shrimp taco recipe that consumers can microwave and serve within minutes.

  • Cooking Instructions: Microwavable — exact timetable unknown.
  • Other Information: Set to roll out to retailers sometime during Spring 2015.

Squid Ink Tempura (Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks)

Product_3.jpg

The latest edition to the Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks menu in Singapore and Malaysia vows to take consumers to the dark side of tempura and street food. For a limited time only, the Taiwanese Night Market-inspired food vendor will be offering squid ink tempura via its Singapore and Malaysia locations.

The tempura — which boasts a jet-black, crispy appearance — will be sprinkled with parsley to add an extra pop of flavor. Not only does the product offer new flavors and a hip appearance, but by virtue of the squid ink used in its creation — a source of iron and antioxidants — the tempura may also lower the risk of heart disease in consumers, Shihlin representatives noted.

  • Cooking Instructions: The recipe is top secret, and the product is only sold through Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks’ Singapore and Malaysia stores.
  • Other Information: Starting on 22 May 2015, customers who shout "HeiHeiHey" along with any appropriate sentiment of their choice (such as "HeiHeiHey~ I want you!") when ordering the Squid Ink Tempura will be entitled to an immediate discount off their purchase.

Other Product Promotions:

The latest promotion from King & Prince Seafood could save foodservice operators double — up to USD 500 total — on cases of Krabbycakes Junior (1.5 oz) and Seafood Hushpuppies.

“Krabbycakes® have been in the market for nearly three decades and are still the gold standard for all seafood cakes. We are helping foodservice operators save on their favorite while trying new seafood items on their menu,” said Mike Tigani, director of marketing at King & Prince Seafood, of the deal.

Foodservice operators have until 31 August 2015 to take advantage of the offer.
