Partnership launches biodegradable shrimp packaging

A transatlantic partnership announced yesterday that its first seafood product in compostable packaging is now available at ASDA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Wal-Mart in the United Kingdom.

Easy-peel, cooked jumbo king prawns from The All Natural Seafood Co. in Canada are available in biodegradable packaging developed by Dawnfresh Seafoods of Scotland. The in-shell prawns, which are Pacific white shrimp from Thailand, are available exclusively for the next six months at U.K. ASDA locations. The shrimp are free of artificial color, phosphate and brine.

''We are thrilled to be part of this groundbreaking initiative,'' said Ian Hamilton, managing director of The All Natural Seafood Co., in a press release. ''It speaks volumes about the nature of the seafood industry today that it took the combined efforts of British and Canadian firms, working with a Thai packer, and using packaging components from three different countries to deliver this product to market.''

The 160-gram (5.6-ounce) packages are being offered at a trial price in ASDA of £1.98 (US$3.91) before being given a suggested retail price of £2.78 ($5.49).
