Supervalu on road to sustainability

Supervalu on Friday announced that, by 2015, it will source 100 percent of its top 20 wild seafood species from Marine Stewardship Council-certified fisheries, from fisheries in full assessment under the MSC program or from fisheries involved in a Fishery Improvement Project with the World Wildlife Fund.

The announcement comes more than a year after the United States’ fifth largest food retailer partnered with the WWF to develop a sustainable seafood sourcing strategy.

Already, more than 40 percent of the top 20 wild seafood species sold by Supervalu are MSC-certified or in full assessment. The retailer is also supporting Fishery Improvement Projects in cooperation with WWF, including Indonesian yellowfin tuna fisheries.

Supervalu will also continue to work with the Food Marketing Institute’s Sustainable Seafood Working Group and WWF’s Aquaculture Dialogues, which are currently creating standards for eight farmed fish species.

“By sourcing our products from sustainable fisheries, as well as supporting fishery improvement projects, we are helping ensure sustainable seafood for generations to come,” said Chris Hooks, Supervalu’s VP of meat, seafood, dairy and frozen foods.

Based in Eden Prairie, Minn., Supervalu operates nearly 4,300 supermarkets nationwide under banners such as Acme, Albertsons, Jewel, Jewel-Osco and Shaw’s.
