Thai Union introduces new spicy tuna flakes

Thai Union has formed a new partnership with a local producer of mixed chili paste to launch five new flavors of spicy tuna flakes for the Thai market, the company announced in a release.

The new products are the results of partnership between Thai Union’s SEALECT Tuna and mixed chili paste supplier Pa Waen and will be available at major supermarkets in Thailand and online channels.

The SEALECT spicy tuna flakes come in five flavors, combining key Thai spices such as galangal, turmeric, bird’s eye chili, pepper, and lemongrass.

“At Thai Union, we do not limit our product innovation only to the lab, and responding to local demand is something we always look at. Thai food is very famous for its spicy dishes and we think collaborating with a well-known local brand to meet customers’ demands to combine a tuna dish with their favorite taste is a very good idea,” Saran Rattanarungruengchai, Thai Union's general manager of emerging markets, said in a company statement. “The collaboration has combined our healthy and nutritious tuna with special recipes by Pa Waen, a brand developed by a respectable entrepreneur who started her business from scratch and has become famous for its mouth-watering homemade recipes. Pa Waen’s plant uses local ingredients from nearby communities.”

Thai Union is a major producer of shelf-stable tuna products in the world. Its global brand portfolio includes international brands such as Chicken of the Sea, John West, Petit Navire, Parmentier, Mareblu, King Oscar, and Rügen Fisch, and Thai-leading brands SEALECT, Fisho, Qfresh, Monori, Bellotta, and Marvo.

Thai Union said in November its sales in the third quarter of last year fell 6.8 percent year-on-year to THB 31.84 billion (USD 1.02 billion, EUR 0.93 billion) due mainly to the appreciation of the baht against key trading currencies. Its sales in the first nine months also declined 4 percent to THB 93.42 billion (USD 3 billion, EUR 2.7 billion).
