For most Americans, Memorial Day, which takes place today, Monday, 29 May, is a holiday associated with grilling burgers and hot dogs.
But American retailers are viewing this year’s holiday as a marketing opportunity for seafood, aiming special sales toward those looking for a healthier option, or simply a change from the normal routine. The biggest promotions appear to be for swordfish and tuna, along with shellfish such as crab, shrimp and clams – which, not coincidentally, are historically some of the biggest sellers in U.S. supermarkets for the week leading up to the holiday.
