U.S. industry celebrates National Seafood Month

To celebrate National Seafood Month in October, Joe’s Crab Shack surveyed its guests about their seafood preferences.  In addition, SeaPak Shrimp & Seafood Co. is running a month-long “Shrimptacular” campaign.

More than 75 percent of Joe's Crab Shack guests eat seafood at least once a month, according to the chain's survey of more than 600,000 Facebook fans and email subscribers. An additional 41.9 percent eat seafood out at least once a week and only 6 percent eat seafood out only on special occasions.

Most people (47.9 percent) choose crab when they eat seafood out, 29.1 percent choose lobster, 20.8 percent said they eat shrimp and 2.1 percent chose clams. Joe’s Crab Shack recently introduced the Santolla Steampot and the Arctic Bay Steampot to its menu, which matches with the survey findings that 65.7 percent of people who eat out like their seafood steamed. Twenty percent of guests prefer their seafood grilled, 9.8 percent like it fried and 4.5 percent prefer it baked.

Also for National Seafood Month, SeaPak is running a “Shrimptacular” online promotion, which allows shoppers to receive product coupons and participate in weekly prize giveaways. SeaPak is marketing the promotion, named after the company’s best-selling line of shrimp products, through “mommy bloggers” on its website, Twitter and Facebook.

“National Seafood Month reminds us about the great reasons to eat shrimp, and SeaPak’s full line of delicious, coastal shrimp favorites make it easy for eating seafood to become a delicious routine,” said Daryl Miller, director of marketing for SeaPak. The Shrimptacular event on SeaPak’s website includes health and recipe information about shrimp, coupons and giveaways such as digital photo albums.

While other restaurant chains and suppliers are not yet running specials for National Seafood Month, independent restaurants are reminding guests about their seafood offerings. For example, E & E Grill House in New York is urging patrons to try its Steamed Mussels with Grilled Chorizo. Bar DuPont in Washington, D.C., recently tweeted this message: “October is National Seafood Month - the perfect reason to try our Dupont Seafood Platter featuring shrimp, oysters, Hamachi tartar, poached lobster, and King Crab legs.”
