UK fishmonger awards adds new honors

Eight new titles have been added to the annual Master Fishmonger Standard Awards in recognition of the wider range of skills used in the fishmonger trade, as well as sustainability commitments and local engagement efforts.

The new awards comprise: Blocksman of the Year, Training and Development, Best Mobile Fish Shop, Best Community Outreach, Best Fish and Shellfish Counter, Sustainability – Retail, Sustainability – Seafood Processor, and Engagement with local fishing fleets.

These awards will be presented alongside the certification of fishmongers who have completed one of the Master Fishmonger Standard (MFS) tiers, which reward excellence across all levels of professional experience. Winners will receive a free place on the MFS program, a marketing grant to help promote their business, and a trophy.

Now in its third year, the Master Fishmonger Standard Awards will take place on 8 June at Fishmongers’ Hall in London.

This ceremony will also see the second MFS Young Fishmonger Award, open to fishmongers under the age of 25.

The MFS was created in 2018 by the guild of the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers, in partnership with the National Federation of Fishmongers, Seafish and the Seafood School at Billingsgate. As well as identifying achievements for fishmongers at three levels of progression – Recognized, Advanced and Master, it also strives to encourage and enable a high standard of skill and increased knowledge about the seafood industry.

The Worshipful Company of Fishmongers has been helping to uphold fishmonger standards since 1272.
