Wegmans on Friday announced that beginning Sunday organic salmon, farm-raised in Ireland, will be available in its more than 75 stores.
The salmon, raised by Murphy’s Irish Seafood, are bred under conditions that address the most significant health and environmental challenges in farmed salmon production. Fed sustainably sourced organic feeds, the salmon grow to 12 pounds in 14 months.
“This supplier controls its products from day one. They raise their own juvenile stock on the Comhola River using a diet of sustainable natural and organic ingredients,” said Carl Salamone, Wegmans’ VP of seafood. “The smolts are then moved to the pens in the Bantry Bay where their number is strictly limited in each pen for a near-to-natural growing environment with massive water movement; this is great for the fish and less stressful on the environment.”
The salmon fillets are priced at USD 17.99 per pound.
