The Indian Council of Agricultural Research’s (ICAR) Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has announced a new smartphone app capable of measuring the width and length of a fish without touching them.
“The application is aimed at simplifying biological data collection during field surveys and supporting more systematic generation of fisheries data for scientific assessment and resource monitoring,” CMFRI Senior Scientist and ICAR-National Fellow Eldho Varghese, who developed the application, said in a release.
The app, named MatsyaMetri, automatically records measurements from images of fish, compiling the data for use in fisheries population analysis, stock assessment, and resource monitoring. Once the app is loaded, users simply point the smartphone camera at a flat surface and place a fish within view. Multiple individuals of the same species can be measured during a session.
ICAR-CMFRI Director Grinson George said MatsyaMetri will simplify biological data collection and was designed for fisheries scientists, researchers, and field survey teams. The app was developed under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education through the ICAR-National Fellow Project.
