New app creates online seafood auctions in China

Wild eel and wild grouper are two of the species featuring in a new Chinese app that allows fishermen to sell their catch to consumers in an online auction.

The app was developed by Zhejiang Zhong Xing Guang Dianzi Science & Technology Co. – which uses the English brand name Link Radar. It’s a firm with a track record in supplying radar and other satellite communication equipment to fishing vessels.

The “Hai Yang Yi Yuan Lai” (it roughly translates as “Seafood Snapshot”) app, available for download on iTunes and Google Play, promises to give fishermen more financial security given they can put their catches on the app without waiting for the journey to port.

While the bulk of offerings on the app are common species like shrimp and croaker, high-priced premium species like grouper and wild eel – some of them protected species – also make an appearance on the app.
