The Mexico government is offering aquaculture operators high quality seed and funding as part of its efforts to boost aquaculture production.
“It is a priority for the Government of Mexico – headed by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo – to promote the production of aquaculture and fishing producers because they generate jobs and are a pillar for the food sovereignty of our country,” Conapesca said in its 28 July announcement.
Conapesca announced that the application window for the Componente de Recursos Genéticos Acuícolas will be open from 3 to 14 August. Through the program, producers can obtain certified seed, larvae, or fry for several aquaculture species, including oysters, shrimp, rainbow trout, tilapia, catfish, and carp. Applicants can only select a single species to receive.
All products offered through the program have been certified by Senasica, as the purpose of the program is to ensure high genetic quality for Mexican aquaculture products.
Recipients must be registered with the government, have valid identification, and an aquaculture or fishing permit.
Applicants can also receive up to MXN 90,000 (USD 5,215, EUR 4,522) to support production, with payments delivered in a single installment by the Instancia Dispersora de Recursos.
